MAHOGANY SECRETAIRE BOOKCASE

Catalogue No. 1642

This is a late 18th/early 19th century (c.1800) mahogany secretaire bookcase. The lower section has four long drawers. The top drawer is fitted with an arrangement of eleven small drawers, separated by six pigeon holes. The small internal drawer fronts are veneered with maple and the drawer base is lined with a green baize writing surface. The chest stands on swept bracket feet and is fitted with later replacement brass oval handles that are appropriate to the period. The bookcase section has gothic arched glazing bars and has a removable cornice section that has gothic arch decoration that terminates in small split turned pendants below a moulded cornice. The doors open to reveal three adjustable shelves. The bookcase is fitted with a key. The secretaire bookcase is in good condition throughout. There are a few age related marks and some minor old repairs to the rails between the drawers, commensurate with age. On three of the small internal drawers the dome part of the knob is missing but the drawer pulls remain perfectly usable.

The bookcase has an internal depth of 27cm. The height to the writing surface is 83cm
