This is a late 18th century (c.1790) french chestnut coffer. The coffer is of panelled construction, having four shaped panels to the front and one single panel to each end. The front of the coffer is decorated with black and white herringbone inlay, together with stylized trees and starburst decorative inlay. the coffer is highlighted with brass stud-work decoration (typical of north eastern France) and the inlay is a mixture of holly and ebony. The top is constructed from four planks of chestnut. The coffer is in excellent clean condition throughout, with only a few marks to the lid, commensurate with age and usage.
